Getting to Lumi i Shales by Car. In my opinion, renting a car is the best way to see Albania. It gives you a lot of flexibility and it means you don't have to rely on public transport. If you're staying in Tirana, the drive to Lumi i Shales will take you around 3 hours. From Shkoder, it's just under 2 hours.

How to visit the Shala River? You can visit the Shala River with a little boat that departs from the Komani Lake Ferry Terminal. Shala River boats only operate in the summer months. You can get a minibus (6:30 AM) from Shkoder, a minibus (5 AM) from Tirana, hire a private 4 wheel drive taxi or drive from Shkoder (app. 2 hours).

Where is This Amazing Place in Albania Called Lumi i Shales? Lumi i Shales is a bay is situated along the Shala River in the middle of the Albanian Alps. Located in the center of the north of the country, visiting here is no quick stop, and requires a full day, (or even a night!).

There is a Komani Lake Ferry that shuttles people and a limited number of cars from the village of Koman to the town of Fierza in 2.5 hours, however there are smaller boats that also take guests to their guesthouses or bring supplies. The ferry departs Komani Lake terminal at 9 am and leaves Fierza in the opposite direction at 1 pm.

Lumi i shales is one of the most beautiful spots in Albania and was easily one of the highlights of my road trip. It is not the easiest place to get to, and as we don't speak Albanian the whole journey was a bit confusing, we honestly has no idea if we were going where we wanted to, but luckily it all worked out!
